This study has aimed to find about the effect of the learned helplessness levels of Nevşehir Hacı Bektaş Veli University tourism faculty students on their academic success in learning English, and whether there is a difference in terms of students' learned helplessness levels and perceived English success according to department, class, age and gender.
The study population of the research consists of 1153 students studying at the Faculty of Tourism, Tourism Management, Tourism Guidance and Gastronomy and Culinary Arts departments in the 2018-2019 academic year. “Convenience Sampling” method was used in the research. It was aimed to apply the scales to all students and distributed to all students. It has been determined that the number of scales that can be evaluated is 253. As a data collection tool in the research, the "Learned Helplessness in English Learning Scale", which was developed by Sucu (2018), whose reliability and validity studies were conducted in her doctoral study, was used. In addition, a personal information form containing questions about students' gender, age, department, class and academic achievement perception levels was prepared and applied.
As a result of the research, it was determined that there was a significant relationship between the students' levels of learned helplessness and their perceived academic success. According to the findings, no significant difference was found between the level of learned helplessness and gender and class. On the other hand, a significant difference was found between the level of learned helplessness and the age and departments of the students. |
